This week marks the release of Fantastic Four #587, the supposedly second-to-last issue of the series that purportedly features the death of one member of Marvel’s famous first family. I’m not going to spoil the issue here; it really doesn’t matter which member of the Fantastic Four dies in this heavily promoted issue.
Marvel Comics offers a clear reminder why the death in question doesn’t matter with another one of its new releases this week. The reason is right there on on the cover of Secret Avengers #9.

Note: Of course, just because the death in FF shouldn’t get people to read the comic doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. I plan on checking it out, not for the sales stunt, but for what writer Jonathan Hickman does with the characters as the result of that development. It certainly could make for some interesting bits of characterization.

Well worth checking out if you’ve been reading this run. It really had me captivated. Jonathan Hickman is writing some of my favorite comics currently.
I’ve bought all the Hickman issues. The “multiple Reed’s” run was interesting and my favorite of the differing story lines. I’m of the opinion, however, each issue feels like a 100 page comic whittled down to the size of a “normal monthly”. The enormous impressions/scope/importance involved here has had need for a much bigger time frame to play out. How this all wraps up will define Hickman’s run. Hickman is of a refreshing stance when it comes to the FF so far but may yet end up his tenure in the too-typical generic Marvel “wrap ups” fashion…as in disappointing. I’ll cross my fingers here and hedge all bets.
