Comics criticism and commentary from Don MacPherson

So What Do DC Creators Think of All the New 52 Hubbub?

Posted by Don MacPherson on September 6th, 2011

I’ve written a number of times about DC’s New 52 initiative, sometimes praising its boldness, the PR moves it’s made, even some storytelling choices. I’ve also criticized some of its decisions and missteps. But what I’ve written has been nothing as compared to what other comics readers and commentators have posted all over the corners of the Internet dedicated to comic books. Some have sworn off DC’s super-hero titles altogether, for example, and others dismissing the New 52 as a stunt that will fail from the start (though that argument seems to have been proven wrong already, at least from a short-term perspective).

DC officials have touted, defended and explained the New 52 and associated decisions, always trying to keep a sunny disposition as they do so. Creators involved with the 52 new titles have done so as well, both online and at various convention appearances this summer.

But what do they really think about the chorus of negativity that’s inevitably to be found online. The following panel from the upcoming Justice League International (written by Dan Jurgens and illustrated by Aaron Lopresti) might offer some insight…

Or, you know, the panel’s just about what’s going on in the story rather than being some kind of metatextual comment.

Oh, that panel will do wonders for their image. Stereotyping in defence of ageism for marketing’s sake.

Yes, but those preview pages almost immediately establish that Booster is the jerk we all knew and loved before 52. Which means the protests are right about him.

Of all the books I am getting tomorrow, this one has the lowest expectation set. A good cast might be totally offset by a dated and self-referential Jurgens script.

I got nothing against the New 52 initiative, I just wish they got better writers work on some of the titles. Lobdell and Krul got multiple titles to write, while Brian Wood got none and now he’s off to Marvel. Smooth move there, DC.

If that’s what DC actually thinks about hateful internet trolls… well… who can blame them? They’re not wrong, are they? A couple things to consider: 1) Trolls are completely different than legitimate critics who write valuable, insightful, well-worded reviews. They’re not bagging on you, Don, but rather the nasty, vitriol-fueled message board dwellers who often OUGHT to be embarrassed of themselves. 2) This is FUNNY! It’s just a good old fashioned poking of fun. I don’t know about you but I laughed.

Jim – Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire, Peter Milligan, Nathan Edmondson and Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti ARE better writers. I agree about Lobdell and Krul but don’t miss out on the better creators working on new DC comics lately.

Oh, I didn’t think that was the case.

    D. Peace, The thing is Snyder, Lemire, Milligan, JG and JP were already writing for DC titles before the New 52 initiative started. Just thought DC would’ve attracted more good writers that’re new to mainstream DC than getting guys who were once well-known writing comics in the 90′s. I don’t want to turn this into DC vs Marvel debate, especially since I’m more a DC guy, but I could make a list of great writers currently writing for Marvel that could trump DC’s. I mean, DC assigned artists to do the writing as well, even though they’ve been known to have trouble staying on schedule when they were only doing the art and for some reason, Dan Didio is writing again.
