I’m a huge fan of The Amazing Race. The Emmy award-winning reality show has always struck me as the most interesting, most entertaining and most genuine source of human emotion in a game-show setting. Aside from its disastrous “family edition” season of the show, The Amazing Race has always enthralled me with its adventure, humor and fast-paced drama.
And now, it’s going to feature not just one of us, but two.
The Associated Press reports that among the 11 teams of two participating in the 13th season this fall are superhero and gaming enthusiasts Bill Kahler, 41, right, and Mark Yturralde, 42. Of the two San Diego natives, Yturralde’s comic-book pedigree is even stronger, as he’s listed as the treasurer of Comic-Con International.
From the team’s profile on CBS.com:
Mark and Bill, friends for over 23 years, first met at a science fiction club and have been bonding over their love for comics and games ever since. Mark says that he “wears geek like a badge of honor.”
Quoting from the AP report:
“We did extensive research on what to wear — what was lightweight and would help us move the fastest,” said Yturralde. “I think it was the longest I ever went without wearing a logo on my T-shirt. If you see me on the street, I’m usually wearing a Superman, Bizarro or Batman T-shirt on a constant basis, but we had to utilize more multi-use clothing for The Amazing Race.”
Personally, I think colorful super-hero logo shirts would have made them stand out even more from the other teams, made up mostly of the typical eye-candy contestants one finds on these shows. I suspect that another reason for their discarding of the comics logos is the trademark issue.
The last time comics culture was as mainstream as it is today was probably 60 years ago, so bringing a comics-connected duo into the show makes sense. Here’s hoping that the show’s editors (and Kahler and Yturralde themselves) offer a more rounded portrayal of the comics enthusiast than Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons or most of the cast of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
The new season of The Amazing Race premieres Sept. 28 on CBS.
