A comic artist with a quarter century of experience in the industry, including memorable projects involving Batman for DC Comics, is heading back to school, but he’ll be the teacher and anybody, anywhere can attend classes.
Bo Hampton — an Atlanta, Georgia-based artist known for such comics as DC’s Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Batman: Castle of the Bat and Legend of Sleepy Hollow from Image Comics — launched Drawing for Comics on Nov. 1. It’s an online course teaching comics illustration, and Hampton is delivering it through a series of videos, as well as options for live Skype assessment sessions.
Hampton isn’t coming into the world of art instruction cold. He taught at the Savannah College of Art and Design and served as the chairman of its sequential arts department in 1992-93.
“I simply love teaching and drawing,” Hampton told Eye on Comics, noting the development of the online course doesn’t mean his time as a professional artist is behind him.
“My art career is always up and down in comics, but my new graphic novel from Dark Horse called The Once and Future Tarzan drops in early spring 2018. I also draw storyboards for film and TV in Atlanta … But I miss the teaching I did at SCAD in Savannah when we developed their sequential arts program.”
He said he plans to work the Skype and scan revision teaching around his other work.
Drawing for Comics is pretty much his solo venture. Hampton said there are no plans for guest lectures, and for now, the course work will focus on drawing, inking, perspective and storytelling.
Enrolment is open now, and as the website notes, it’s open-ended. Hampton said those who sign up can proceed at their own pace and they have access to the videos for as along as they like across multiple devices. The site also notes Hampton plans to launch a second course through the site Dec. 1. Hampton is even offering refunds for those who aren’t satisfied with what they find within specific timeframes depending on the course level selected.
