Eye on Comics

Comics criticism and commentary from Don MacPherson

Rising from the Grave

Posted by Don MacPherson on September 23rd, 2009

Blackest Night promo imageDC super-heroes aren’t the only ones coming back from the dead these days. Yes, Eye on Comics has managed to claw and crawl out of the digital grave into which it disappeared over the past couple of weeks (thanks to a site hack and worm that messed things up royally). Thanks to a good friend with a much greater degree of technology expertise than myself, the site was resurrected. And then it died. It rose from the ashes again, only to succumb and died again. I’m continuing to struggle with problems, but it seems though there’s light at the end of that particularly problem-plagued tunnel.

While the site was down, there was a period of time when it seemed as though it might have been a lost cause. I considered that Eye on Comics may have reached an end (fittingly, just as it approached its third anniversary on Sept. 19). I pondered some questions. Did I want to relaunch with a new site? Join another? Or perhaps just call it quits when it comes to reviewing comics?

My frustrations with the outages and my elation at its various revivals provided me with the answers to those questions. I enjoy writing about comics, and I feel invested in the Eye on Comics brand I’ve developed over the past three years. I thank all my readers (vocal or otherwise) who check out my reviews, commentary and features, and I truly appreciate that audience. I hope you’ll all be patient with me over the next few days (or weeks, we’ll see) as I continue to contend with site problems, but rest assured, my plan is to keep my Eye out.

    Congratulations on your third anniversary!

  2. Don MacPherson Says:

Thanks, Johanna! For those unfamiliar with her, Johanna Draper-Carlson also writes comics reviews and has been doing so online for as long as I have, perhaps a bit longer. She does so incredibly well, and she covers a diverse array of material, much different from what one will find on Eye on Comics. Do yourself a favor and check out her site, Comics Worth Reading.

Don, I also want to say congratulations on your third anniversary, but more importantly just thank you for continuing to write and review. I have followed you from The Fourth Rail and always respect your viewpoint and writing, even when I have no interest in picking up the comic you are writing about.

I often wish there was a ‘tip jar’ on your site so I could express my appreciation of your reviews. You give greater service and appreciation than the coffee shop on the corner. And I know running this service isn’t for free, either.

And you have to support a fellow Canuck.

Glad to read you are sticking around.

I, for one, welcome our undead optical overlords.

Welcome back, Don! And happy 3rd!

    “…and the dead eye opened”

Good to have you back Don, and with a renewed hunger for brain-y comic commentary too.

I’ve been considering posting some surplus comics for sale here on the site as a means of defraying costs. That way people could support the site and get something in return as well. Is that something in which readers would be interested?

Thanks for the kind words, all. They’re much appreciated.

I m’ happy that after -nearly- two weeks i can read again your writings (i couldn’t get in your site exactly after my last post and i wanted to write something more but all we’re is dust in the wind!). I hope you’ve solved the problems and continue to help us detect the good comics out there.

  8. Nick Sousanis Says:

Welcome back, Don, and happy anniversary. You’re a valued and welcome voice week in and week out.
    - best,
    nick

  9. Chris Says:

Glad to see the site back and congrats on your anniversary. I’ve been reading your reviews since Psycomic.com. Keep ‘em coming.

  10. Thomas Says:

Don, personally I would prefer to ‘tip’ directly. You would not be the first comic commentator to do this and the selling of comics would probably be too time consuming and distracting. You are probably better off hitting Ebay and letting us thank you for your efforts directly.

  11. Botch the Crab Says:

Another loyal reader (me) says congrats!

I think a tip jar would be cool, but I think selling comics would be better. Especially recommended ones. Or classics.

Just want to say thank you and please don’t stop doing EOC, I kept checking everyday and finally!!! there it is!!

    Saludos from Puerto Rico!!

  13. LoneWolf Says:

I am a regular reader from Spain. Keep up doing good reviews.
I check every week and I am happy when there are new entries.
Three years! I was a reader from the days of The Fourth Rail which by the way Google is advising it could be harmful!? I used to visit it for reference of old reviews and I wonder how come it became harmful.

  14. Ray Says:

I have been reading your reviews forever now and always check the site. Thanks a lot and good luck with the various issues plaguing you. The delays are fine.

  15. Mark T. Says:

So glad to see the site is back up and running. I honestly was getting a bit worried. I truly enjoy reading your commentary and reviews, as they are a stand out in the genre.

Keep up the fantastic work, and good luck keeping the site running smoothly.

  16. Brian Woods Says:

I was glad to see your site back today when I checked. It’s definitely good to have you around, especially given the chance that we might see more non review pieces like your 9/11 comics article.

    Keep up the great work!
